Bizarre moment New Zealand tradie hands a pensioner $5,000 cash before before running away

A mysterious trader handed a pensioner $5,000 in cash before walking away, leaving the pensioner stunned and confused.

The 78-year-old, who wished to remain anonymous, was enjoying the summer sun in the front garden of his Auckland home at around 2pm on December 20 when a man in his 20s approached him.

The tradie knew the retiree’s name and asked about him before handing over an envelope containing $100 NZD notes and walking away.

The pensioner followed the man for an explanation, but he replied: “I’m just a delivery person.”

A month has passed since then and the pensioner has yet to find out who the man is, despite police involvement and handing over the money for fear of reprisals from the gang members.

CCTV footage from a nearby home shows the ‘gym fit’ man on the street around the time the pensioner was approached.

It was the second time he appeared at the pensioner’s home. He had arrived days earlier and asked about him, but the pensioner’s daughter said he was gone.

He wore all-black shoes, shorts, an upside-down hat, and a shirt with light green stripes down the side.

The man also has a trimmed beard and appears to have tattoos on his right arm.

The image was released to help the pensioner get answers about why he got the money and whether he is in danger.

Shortly after contacting police, the retiree decided it was best to let himself and his wife live in a hotel for a while.

Gangland activities are far from the life of retirees, as they have only worked white-collar jobs and helped start a number of successful businesses.

He said it is a “complete mystery” why he got the money and who owed him.

‘How would he know who I was? How could he know where I lived?” the pensioner told the newspaper NZ Herald.

‘I thought everyone who knew me would know that I would immediately call the police. I always went straight to the police.’

He also said it was particularly confusing because they lived in a house that wasn’t registered in his or his wife’s name for the past few years and not many people would be able to find it.

Police told the publication that the old man could collect the money if it goes unclaimed, but he is not sure if he wants it in his possession.
