Bill Barr said the Democrats’ goal is to use the legal system to get involved in the Republican primary and make sure former President Donald Trump wins because they believe they can defeat him again in 2024.
Trump’s former attorney general said Sunday morning that the recent indictment of the former president and the many other legal battles are a calculated attempt by progressives to embolden the MAGA base.
A Manhattan grand jury moved late last month to indict Trump in the Stormy Daniels hush money payment case — making him the first president ever to be indicted. Last week, the former president was charged in New York.
“The left is always talking about the ills of politicizing the criminal justice system and I totally agree that’s a serious risk, and I’ve spoken out against it for decades,” Barr said during an interview on ABC News. Week program.

“And that’s a pity,” he continued. “This is a clear example of that kind of abuse.”
The former AG, who resigned after the 2020 presidential election but before the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, said last year after Trump announced his 2024 candidacy that it would be a “tragedy” if he became the Republican nominee.
However, Barr, 72, also said last March that he would still vote for Trump if he won the primary.
He said the prosecution of Trump “may be achieving its goal, which is to get into the middle of the Republican primary process and turn it into a circus.”

The impeachment and indictment of Trump has only emboldened and mobilized his staunchest supporters.

So far, Trump has three challengers in the primary race: his former ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, biotech multimillionaire Vivek Ramaswamy and former Arkansas governor Asa Hutchinson, who is running on a clear anti-Trump platform.
The most likely Trump to take down is Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who has not yet made a formal announcement about whether he will run in the 2024 GOP primary.
He consistently polls right behind Trump, sometimes even beating the ex-president.
Despite the indictment last week, the former president seems unfazed. He attended a UFC fight in Miami with singer and recording artist Kid Rock on Saturday night and received thunderous applause in the red state he now calls home.
