President Joe Biden told the Rev. Al Sharpton that he is running for a second term because Donald Trump is the “most anti-democratic” president in “American history.”
He also criticized Trump, who is leading in the polls for the Republican presidential nominee, for wanting “revenge on people.”
‘The things Trump says. Trump says things that are not clear,” Biden said in an interview that aired on Sharpton’s radio program on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
“He is the most anti-democratic president – with a small ‘d’ – in American history. The things he says. And he means them. He talks about wanting to get revenge on people,” Biden added. “It’s just outrageous stuff.”

Biden’s interview aired on the same day that Iowa voters headed to caucus locations for the first contest of the Republican presidential nominating contest. Trump had a nearly 30-point lead over his rivals in the state’s final poll before the caucuses began.
Meanwhile, Biden has come under scrutiny over his decision to run for another four years, with critics citing poor approval ratings and concerns about his age. At 81, Biden would be 86 at the end of a second term. Trump, at 77, has not faced the same criticism as his age.
Some experts are already predicting that Trump could finally clinch the Republican presidential nomination by March, which would be one of the first starts to a general election campaign.

The president brought Martin Luther King Jr. Day at a service event in Philadelphia, where he helped pack food at a distribution center.
Biden’s focus on the campaign trail was on Trump. He has made defending democracy the centerpiece of his re-election campaign and has repeatedly said Trump threatens the principles on which the country was founded.

He told donors at a political fundraiser in December that Trump is a threat to American democracy, noting that the former president vowed to be a dictator for a day if elected in 2024.
“He says it out loud,” Biden said.
‘He embraces political violence rather than rejecting it. We can’t let that happen.’
Biden has also attacked Trump for using language similar to that of the Nazis.
“He’s talking about the blood of poisoned Americans, repeating the exact same language that was used in Nazi Germany,” Biden said at a campaign event in Philadelphia tied to the anniversary of the Jan. 6 insurrection in the capital.
“He proudly posted on social media the words that best describe his 2024 campaign. Quote: revenge. Quote: power within. Quote: dictatorship.’
“There is no confusion about who Trump is and what he is up to,” Biden said.

Trump has said he wants to be a dictator for one day, but argued he wants it to get things done.
“I said I want to be a dictator for one day,” Trump said at the New York Young Republican Club’s annual gala in December. ‘And do you know why I wanted to become a dictator? Because I want a wall, right? I want a wall and I want to drill, drill, drill.’
Trump is facing federal charges over his role in the January 6 insurrection. The state of Georgia has charged him and his allies with conspiracy charges related to efforts to overturn Biden’s victory there.
The former president has tried to flip the script, arguing that Biden is “the true destroyer of democracy” by using the federal government to go after a political rival. The White House says they don’t interview in lawsuits.
