President Joe Biden hit back at his predecessor Donald Trump after suggesting he pardon those who took part in the January 6 riot, adding that they “were not good people.” Biden tweeted shortly after Trump said so on CNN at his town hall on Wednesday night, comparing them to those who caused chaos in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2017.
The president wrote, “There were no fine people on either side of Charlottesville. The January 6 rioters were not good people. End of story.’ Trump initially lashed out at his Vice President Mike Pence and slammed him for refusing to support his false claims that the 2020 election was set. The presidential candidate answered a question from CNN moderator Kaitlin Collins about whether he apologized to his former deputy and said he was considering pardoning some January 6 rioters.
‘No, he did something wrong. He should have returned the votes to the state legislature and I think we would have had a different outcome,” the former president told CNN. “I am inclined to pardon many of them. I can’t say it for everyone because a few of them are probably out of control,” Trump said. The New Hampshire primetime forum was already said to be noteworthy when it was publicly announced last week. Trump and CNN have long sparred with each other, with the former president often labeling the network “fake news.” But jurors in New York found that Trump had sexually assaulted and defamed advice columnist E. Jean Carroll. The jury awarded her $5 million in damages. Trump called the verdict “an embarrassment” and promised to appeal.
A small group of anti-Trump protesters gathered outside the town hall venue at Saint Anselm College in Manchester on Wednesday night. Their signs carried messages such as “No one is above the law” and “Elections, not insurrection.” The appearance will also serve as yet another contrast to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who is seen as Trump’s top rival for the GOP presidential nomination. The 44-year-old is expected to launch his campaign in the coming weeks, but he is constantly attacked by Trump for dodging the press.
