The original film was released in 1984 and follows a rebellious cop named Axel.

He secretly goes on a mission to find out who killed his childhood friend, despite his boss telling him not to continue the investigation.

The action comedy was hugely successful and marked Murphy’s first solo leading role in a film.

The film grossed $234 million at the US box office, making it the highest-grossing film of that year and inspiring two (soon to be three) more films.

It helped transform Eddie, a then-budding star known more for his comedy sketches on Saturday Night Live than his acting, into a major Hollywood figure.
