Bert Fields ‘dead at 93’: Lawyer defended Michael Jackson, Tom Cruise

Famed celebrity attorney Bert Fields has reportedly died at the age of 93.

The Los Angeles based attorney passed away late Sunday night at his Malibu home, a spokesperson for his law firm, Greenberg Glusker Fields Claman & Machtinger Llp., announced on Monday.

No official statement has been released yet.

Fields was famous for representing several high-profile clients such as The Beatles, Madonna and Warren Beatty.

But he was best known for defending Michael Jackson when he was hit with molestation accusations and for working with Tom Cruise when a tabloid accused him of being gay and another claimed that the mega star had ‘abandoned’ the daughter he had with Katie Holmes, Suri Cruise.

And he also worked with Jeffrey Katzenberg, David Geffen, James Cameron, Dustin Hoffman, Mike Nichols, Jerry Bruckheimer, Joel Silver, and writers Mario Puzo, James Clavell, Tom Clancy and Clive Cussler. 

Fields did not only represent artists, he often worked with movie studios such as DreamWorks, MGM and  United Artists.

His worked with Jackson was legendary.

Fields represented the pop singer when he was accused of molesting children.

Per the LA Times, in 1993, Evan Chandler accused the American Jackson of sexually abusing his 13-year-old son, Jordan Chandler. 

Jackson had befriended Jordan after renting a vehicle from Jordan’s stepfather. 

And he also held a press meeting where he said that the crooner was addicted to drugs.

As far as Cruise, Fields represented the Top Gun star in two notable cases.

One was when a tabloid accused the movie star of being gay, something Cruise strongly denied.

And Fields also worked with the Jerry Maguire actor when Bauer Publishing accused Cruise of abandoning Suri as he had not been photographed with the child in years.

Cruise argued he had no abandoned her emotionally.

Fields also taught law as well as Stanford University and Harvard University.

According to Green Glusker Fields Claman & Machtinger, ‘Bert has represented virtually every major Hollywood studio and talent agency, and he has tried many of the landmark cases in the entertainment and communications industries over the past 30 years.’

And he worked with Arizona cotton farmers, Las Vegas hotels and casinos, real estate developers.

Fields attended Harvard Law School (1952) and University of California, Los Angeles (B.A., 1949). He passed the bar in both New York and California.

Bert was also an author, under a pseudonym, of two novels, per his company’s website.

The first published by Simon and Schuster and the second by Random House.

His third book is a biographical work on Richard III published by ReganBooks/HarperCollins under his own name. 

His fourth book is an analysis of the Shakespeare authorship question, also published by ReganBooks/HarperCollins.

He also penned Destiny about Napoleon and Josephine, and Shylock a short novel about Shakespeare and Gloriana, a biography of Elizabeth I. 

These books were published by Marmont Lane Books.
