Bernie Sanders says Biden and McCarthy can ‘start negotiating tomorrow’ on the debt ceiling

Bernie Sanders says Biden and McCarthy could ‘start negotiating’ the debt ceiling tomorrow and says Dems could agree to military spending cuts and tax increases for the wealthy – after saying NO ONE has to be a billionaire

  • “I think we can move towards cuts in military spending without spending 10 times more than people in any other country on Earth,” he said.
  • And after running against Biden in a primary in 2020, Sanders said he thought Biden could “win in a landslide” in 2024

Senator Bernie Sanders said Democrats could get behind cuts to the military and that President Biden and Chairman Kevin McCarthy could begin negotiations immediately if Republicans took bankruptcy off the table.

“Is It Time for President Biden to Negotiate?” the Vermont senator was asked by CNN’s Dana Bash on Sunday.

“I think we can start negotiating tomorrow,” he said.

“But you can’t hold the global economy hostage. What the Republicans have to say is that we absolutely call to make sure we pay our debt. Let’s sit down and negotiate a budget.”

Last week, Republicans passed a sprawling debt limit bill that they say would save $4.5 trillion in exchange for raising the country’s credit limit by $1.5 trillion. Now the GOP leadership insists the ball is in Biden’s court to come to the negotiating table.

Asked about what kind of cuts the Democrats could negotiate with the Republicans, Sanders said, “I think we can move towards cuts in military spending without spending 10 times more than the people of any other country on Earth.” Massive cost overruns at the Pentagon.”

He also called for tax increases on the wealthy, adding that he was “willing” to look at government-related budget cuts.

“The biggest companies in this country, the richest people [need to] have a fair share of taxes.”

On CNN Saturday, Sanders had said he didn’t think billionaires should exist.

“We need to go back to very progressive tax policies,” he said. “I think people can get by with $999 million.”

The senator, it’s “no big secret” that he and Biden “have strong differences of opinion,” but stressed that Biden was the right person to run against Republicans.

“We live in a country where you have a big political party, the Republican Party, where many — not all, but many of their leaders don’t even believe in democracy — they perpetuate the myth that Trump won the last election. They try to stop people from voting. They try to deny women the right to control their own bodies,” Sanders said.

“If you believe in democracy you want to see more people voting, not fewer people, I think the choice is pretty clear. And that choice is Biden,” he said.

Sanders also brushed off concerns about Biden’s age.

“Well, I think when you look at a candidate you think about it a lot. I think age is one thing, I think experience is another, I think your track record is another thing,” Sanders said.
