The Catalan side had been trying to sign Silva from City for six months but were eventually discounted for not signing the midfielder – who is valued at £80 million.

Newcastle fans will be hopeful Guimaraes will stay at the club after claiming he is “starting to feel like a Geordie now” and wants to become a “legend”.

“To change countries, to change leagues, and also in a World Cup year, it was a very difficult decision,” he said.

“But I think it was the right one. I’m so happy. It’s a great step. I feel like a Geordie now.

“I’ve always dreamed of playing in the Premier League, but honestly I never thought it could be this good. I am proud of what I do, of myself and of the club, but it was a difficult choice.

Interest in the 24-year-old is understandable, given his impressive performances that helped Newcastle to fourth in the Premier League.

In his 27 appearances, he racked up seven goals and three assists, in addition to his ball-winning and defensive capabilities in midfield.

The Brazilian’s price could rise further if he appears for his national team at the World Cup, which he is expected to do this year given his great form.
