- “Happy Turkey Day,” read the message

Barack and Michelle Obama chose a different way to wish Americans a Happy Thanksgiving.
They enlisted one of their relatives to deliver the message.
The former first couple presented their Portuguese Water Dog Sunny on their social media accounts to mark the occasion.
“From our family (and Sunny!) to yours, I hope you all have a Happy Thanksgiving!” the caption read.
Sunny wore a black and orange checked headscarf with the text ‘Happy Turkey Day’.
The Obamas presented dog Sunny for their Thanksgiving message
The Obamas got Sunny as a puppy in 2013 when Barack Obama was president.
She caused a few incidents during her reign as the first dog.
The same year, she arrived at the White House, Sunny, during a military family arts and crafts event, knocking over a 2-year-old girl. The child was unharmed.
The puppy was purchased as a companion for five-year-old Bo, the Portuguese water dog the Obamas received after the first inauguration — a campaign promise fulfilled, with help from the late Senator Edward Kennedy (D) of Massachusetts, who sent the puppy as a gift.
Bo died of cancer in May 2021 at the age of 12.

The Obamas are likely to spend Thursday with their daughters, Malia and Sasha, 26 and 23.
The girls were always present when their father, as president, held the annual turkey pardon.
In 2014, the internet laughed when Sasha and Malia, then teenagers, were embarrassed by the event, with Obama making several dad jokes.
The following year, that was the last pardon Obama granted to the girls put on a happy face as Obama treated the crowd to dad jokes.
“It’s hard to believe that this is the seventh year I have pardoned a turkey,” the president told the crowd. “Time flies, even if turkeys don’t.”
“That was good, that was good,” Sasha Obama said.
“I thought it was pretty good,” the president said.
