Baltimore Ravens’ 24-game preseason winning streak is broken by Washington Commanders’ Joey Slye in the final ten seconds

The Baltimore Ravens’ historic preseason winning streak was cut short by the Washington Commanders in the closing seconds of Monday night’s game.

John Harbaugh’s team fell to a 29–28 defeat in the final ten seconds of the game by Joey Slye’s successful 49-yard field goal.

Most teams can easily brush off preseason losses, but as it was the first in eight years, this one will have stung more than most for Baltimore.

Sam Howell, who was still in high school the last time the Baltimore Ravens lost a preseason game in 2015, threw for 188 yards and two touchdowns for the Commanders en route to their final win.

Named the Commanders’ starting quarterback last Friday, he showed on Monday why Washington puts its faith in the second-year passer in a pivotal year for coach Ron Rivera and new offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy.

Journeyman Ravens quarterback Josh Johnson matched him pitch to pitch in a thrilling first half, at least by preseason standards.

Johnson finished 10 of 12 for 145 yards and two touchdowns, as well as an end zone interception where the ball fell through the arms of receiver James Proche II and into the waiting hands of commander Quan Martin.

Those missed points proved costly, as Washington’s third-string QB, former Georgia standout Jake Fromm, led the team down the field for the game-winning field goal.

Slye kicked the ball through from 49 yards out to win the game and end Baltimore’s streak.

The Ravens had written themselves into NFL lore with the longest streak in preseason history all the way back to 2015, extending it to 24 last week with a 20-19 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.

But that came to an end on Monday evening.

The last time Baltimore lost during the preseason was on September 3, 2015, in a 20-19 loss to the Atlanta Falcons that ended with a failed two-point conversion.

The streak started with a 22-19 victory over the Carolina Panthers. Ryan Mallett started the game below center and was the first of 14 quarterbacks to play for Baltimore during the streak.

Among the others are franchise quarterbacks Joe Flacco, Lamar Jackson and Robert Griffin III.

Harbaugh has helmed the entire streak since taking the lead in 2008 and winning the Super Bowl in 2012.
