A man was tragically killed in downtown Victoria after being hit by a train.

Emergency services rushed to the corner of Fisken Street and Station Street in Maddingley around 9.30am on Wednesday morning.

Victoria Police confirmed that a man was hit by a train and died on the spot.

A spokeswoman for Ambulance Victoria said paramedics were called to reports of a pedestrian being hit by a train at around 9.30am.

Trains have been delayed and roads have been closed in place of the incident, with the Bacchus Marsh train line expected to be disrupted for some time.

Buses have replaced trains between Melton and Ballarat.

The police are preparing a report for the coroner.
