Two Malian women’s basketball teammates have been filmed bumping into each other in wild scenes after their World Cup loss to Serbia in Sydney.
The violent scuffle between Salimatou Kourouma and Kamite Elisabeth Dabou broke out during a post-match interview with Serb Sasa Cado in the mixed zone and was captured by a Serbian news camera.
Kourouma throws at least three punches before teammates rush in to break up the pair for a shocked Cado.
Kourouma is under contract with Stade Malien, a professional team based in the Malian capital Bamako, while Dabou plays for Center Dorinthie Basket.
Mali qualified for their second World Cup as a late substitute for Nigeria, which withdrew due to administrative issues surrounding the sport in their country.
Mali, the lowest-ranked side of the tournament at number 37 in the world, has lost their first four matches of the tournament and no longer has a chance of reaching the knockout stage.
Salimatou Kourouma, pictured in Mali’s match against Japan earlier in the tournament, was involved in a fistfight with a teammate
The Malians were somewhat competitive in patches, but a 118-58 loss to Australia was a low point. They have yet to play the co-leaders of Group B, Canada, who were unbeaten until Monday night’s thrilling three-point defeat to the Opals.
FIBA did not immediately return the request for comment.
