Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez demanded that Democrats who believe the party will lose in November should “step aside” because they accept “fascism.”
Democrats’ concerns about their ticket’s top spot were put on hold after the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump on Saturday.
Trump’s stunning rally has fueled calls for Joe Biden to be removed from office. And now that momentum for his removal is waning, some Democrats are convinced they will lose the election.
A leading Democrat in the House of Representatives said Axioms: “We have all resigned ourselves to Trump having a second presidency.”
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez demanded that Democrats who believe the party will lose in November “step aside” because they accept “fascism”
Ocasio-Cortez wrote on X of the quote:
“If you are a ‘senior Democrat’ who feels this way, you absolutely need to retire and make room for real leadership that refuses to acquiesce to fascism. This kind of leadership is functionally useless to the American people. Retire.”
Ocasio-Cortez, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) and Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-N.Y.) have all pushed to keep Joe Biden at the top of their lists, while dozens of House Democrats have called on him to resign.
For progressives, Biden could be better than the alternative. Vice President Kamala Harris, for her part, has made a career as a tough-on-crime prosecutor.
“The Biden administration has probably been more open to dialogue with progressives than most other administrations,” Joseph Geevarghese, director of the prominent progressive group Our Revolution, told DailyMail.com.
“That said, our members are clear that they do not see him as a candidate they can trust in terms of electability.”
The stunning Trump rally stalled calls for Joe Biden to step aside — and with momentum for his departure waning, some Democrats are confident they will lose the election
A poll of about 16,000 progressive members of Our Revolution, founded by Senator Bernie Sanders, found that a third of them were less likely to vote for Biden after the debate.
Still, some suspect that progressive lawmakers are willing to anger their bases by backing Biden so they won’t be seen as the problem members of the caucus — the ones against whom establishment Democrats can rally.
“I suspect the establishment Democratic Party would immediately blame progressives for (Biden’s) electoral weaknesses. And I think in this case, our progressive elected leaders didn’t want to be seen as the bloc of the party that was going to stand in the way.”
In a number of X-messages, AOC was accused of portraying himself as a revolutionary and then becoming “establishment.”
“Remember when you told me AOC would change this business from the inside? Yeah, me too,” it said one message on X.
The congressman “decided long ago to rebrand himself and conform to the establishment,” said another.
