Antiques Roadshow guest breaks down in tears over HUGE valuation of Edwardian cufflinks

The owner of two pairs of Edwardian cufflinks was completely shocked by their huge evaluation at Antiques Roadshow at Powis Castle in Wales.

Expert Joanna Hardy was excited when she assessed the special cufflinks and was amazed at their quality, despite being 100 years old.

During a repeat episode on Sunday, Joanna told the owner: ‘Jewellery always tells a story and when I saw these cufflinks they certainly depict an era from 100 years ago, of the vices of an Edwardian gentleman – horse racing, gambling, women, drinks . How did you get this?’

The guest replied, “Well, these are my grandfather’s. My mother has just passed them on to me and the story goes that my grandfather was Lord and Lady Trafford’s driver on the Trafford estate where they lived.

“Mum lived on the estate and what I get from Mum is that it was a gift from them to say thank you for the hard work and service they provided.”

“Just like me,” the guest joked when the expert asked if he had worn the cufflinks.

The owner admitted he knew very little about the cufflinks and revealed he had only worn them once.

Joanna was impressed with the condition of the cufflinks, considering their age and the material they are made of.

She said: ‘This was a typical Edwardian period, when people had come out of the Victorian era, where things had been quite messy and Queen Victoria had been in mourning for a long time, and then you had the Edwardian period, and it was just merriment . and fun and lightness, and these cufflinks really imbued that kind of era.

‘And they are made of painted enamel and you have preserved the details beautifully because they are so exquisitely executed.

‘There’s not one chip, it’s so easy to chip these, so you’ve done a really good job because they’re over 100 years old.

‘They are enameled with a gold back and you will never want to part with them.’

The guest revealed that he had only worn them once and that they had been passed down to him from his mother as they belonged to his grandfather who was ‘Lord and Lady Trafford’s driver at the Trafford estate where they lived’
