Great video shows the real speed planes reach – and people are in disbelief
A video shared on TikTok shows the actual speed planes can reach — leaving some viewers in disbelief.
The seven seconds clampshared by user @plutosdestiny, is simply titled “The real speed of planes.”
In the short video, a small plane can be seen moving through the sky, seemingly quite fast.
Written across the screen in text, embedded in the images of sky and clouds, the words “The real speed of planes” are copied from the caption.
During the clip, the camera captures the footage of what is believed to be a Boeing 737 from what appears to be another airborne craft.
An excerpt from the video (photo) shared by TikTok user @plutosdestiny, showing the “real speed of planes”
The Boeing, which reaches a cruising speed of 545 mph, appears to be traveling very fast.
Because people usually see planes from a great distance and often watch them in the sky while on the ground, they appear to travel extremely slowly.
The apparently slow speed is due to a phenomenon called Motion Parallax.
This concept refers to the fact that objects moving across the frame at a constant speed appear to move more slowly when they are farther from the viewer (a person or camera) than if they were closer.
The person filming the plane in the clip, which has been viewed more than 1.7 million times, is closer to the moving beam than a person normally watching an airplane.
Viewers took to the comment section to share their mixed reactions to the video – some saying it put them off flying
Therefore, the plane looks like it’s moving fast, which it will be – at speeds of several hundred miles per hour.
Reaction to the clip was mixed, with some viewers saying they didn’t believe the video.
One wrote, “I’m going to refuse to believe this.”
Meanwhile, another said, “I didn’t need to know that a few days before I got on the plane.”
