Alex Jones says her ‘obsession’ with getting pregnant put a strain on her marriage

Alex Jones admits that her “obsession” with having a second baby after suffering a miscarriage put a strain on her relationship with husband Charlie Thomson.

In 2017, the presenter, now a mother of three, was forced to undergo a miscarriage operation just nine weeks into her second pregnancy after the fetus stopped developing and her body fought to expel the pregnancy tissue.

Jones, 45, finally welcomed a second child, Kit, at London’s Queen Charlotte Hospital in May 2019, and her own struggles contributed to a new role on the BBC series Alex Jones: Making Babies.

The One Show host worked as a fertility assistant during the flies-on-the-wall reality show, filmed exclusively at the King’s Fertility clinic, and admits to understanding the desperation parents-to-be feel when trying to get pregnant.

She said The times: ‘When people decide to have kids, I know it happened to me, you go from that thing, “Oh, I can’t get pregnant,” to becoming everything you want. You become this person with the blinders on.

Jones admits she had little time to process the loss of what should have been her second child, and the presenter immediately traveled from the hospital to the BBC studios in London’s White City, where she presents The One Show live, five nights a week.

To further complicate matters, the presenter required a second operation after the first failed to remove all the dead tissue, and the delay put a huge strain on her marriage.

“It turns out they didn’t take everything,” he explained. ‘Of course, all you can think is, “Oh my gosh, the clock is ticking,” and you get obsessed with trying to speed things up. It’s not good for your relationship. It’s hard, everything takes its toll.

She added: ‘At one point I didn’t think we would have more than one child. I didn’t enjoy that pregnancy as much because I was constantly thinking, “Is the baby still there? Can I feel the baby kick?”

“Once you’ve experienced something like this, you never enjoy pregnancy in the same way.”

She said: ‘For all of us who have wanted a child, you were raised into your twenties to, ‘not get pregnant, not get pregnant, not get pregnant.’ And then all of a sudden, she one day she decides that now I want to have a baby, and she does a 360 degree turn.

So you obsess. It’s hard when it happens naturally, and it can take a while. But this is a whole new and different level of desire: disappointment and what it does to you as a couple.

‘But I was really naive. I had not thought of it. I thought, “well, there you have it. We’ll try to have a baby and that will be beautiful, and then there will be a baby.” And of course… how naive. You have no control over that.
