Gearin said she loved working at ABC, especially because of the “profound connection” she made with the network’s audience.

“I have loved every challenging, crazy and privileged moment of working for the ABC,” Gearin wrote.

‘I would specifically like to thank the audience; I have developed a deep sense of connection with you and for that I am very grateful.

“I’m honored to have met people from so many different walks of life, all over the world, and told their stories.”

Daily Mail Australia has contacted The ABC for comment.

Gearin joined the network in 1991 as a journalism cadet and became ABC’s first female TV news sports anchor.

During her 34-year tenure, she was ABC’s national sports correspondent, Europe correspondent, presented Drive on ABC Radio Melbourne, co-hosted News Breakfast and worked for 10 years as a long-form specialist for the 7.30 programme.

The Australian news veteran said she was leaving the national broadcaster to explore “other adventures” and is “considering different options.”

“It has been a rich and stimulating time working with some of the best people in the world,” Gearin wrote.

“It’s time for me to explore other adventures, but I leave knowing that ABC’s future is secure in the hands of its critical-thinking employees, who never compromise their values.
