Hundreds of shoppers were stunned to discover a ‘new’ way to score huge discounts at Australian electronics stores – although many have been doing it for years.
Jillie Clark, from Sydney, has been debating with her male colleagues for weeks about whether it is “common knowledge” to ask the salesperson for a better price on products in the store.
“They’re trying to tell me that if you go into a Harvey Norman, JB Hi-Fi [or] Bing Lee, the price an item is advertised for is not the price you should pay,” Jillie said in a TikTok video.
‘I thought… sorry? I’ve never heard this before! There is no way this is common knowledge.
‘Did you know this?! Am I the idiot who pays full price for things?’ she captioned the clip.

A debate ensued in the comments, with many admitting they had “no idea” about the insight, while others, including employees, confirmed it was true.
Customers just have to ask, ‘is this the best price?’ on the desired product to possibly receive a discount.
Jillie claimed she was told to “haggle” with the store clerk for a lower price.
However, she added, “My fear would never be negotiating the price of a tripod with anyone. No. Absolutely not.’

The video quickly racked up more than 60,000 views, with hundreds going back and forth on whether the tip was common knowledge.
“Okay, I didn’t know,” one wrote, while another said: “Whaaat! No, I didn’t know this.’
“I’ve never heard this before,” a third admitted.
‘WHAT?! This is definitely not common knowledge, I had no idea,” someone else added.
‘No! “I didn’t know,” said another, while another was “stunned” by the insight.
Others claimed they had known about the tip for years and had managed to save hundreds of people.
‘Yes it’s true! we recently did it with a TV,” said one.
‘I only know it’s because my dad does it, I’m too scared of it,’ wrote another, while someone else said: ‘Never paid full price at JB Hi-Fi or Harvey Norman.’
A number of employees also joined the conversation. One person wrote: ‘I work at Harvey Norman and if you’re really nice I’ll give you a discount without asking. But if a customer is rude, I make them pay the ticket price.”
‘As a former JB HiFi employee I can confirm this. Usually we don’t try to lower the price unless the price matches. We can only lower the price to a certain price if we put it at the lowest price that we don’t make,” said another.
Another wrote: ‘I knew this because I worked at JB Hi-Fi. It’s not necessarily haggling, often the places are cheaper, but you’re already in a certain store so you ask them for a price match or you might get a discount.”
