When are Arctic Monkeys due to play at Glastonbury 2023? Headliner performance date, time and stage
Arctic Monkeys will appear at Glastonbury for the third time this year, ten years after their last appearance.
The Sheffield band will continue to headline the festival’s opening day, despite concerns over the health of their frontman Alex Turner.
Although the date falls in the middle of their long tour for the new album The Car, Arctic Monkeys are still expected to play all the greatest hits with a bit of their new work.
Royal Blood and Texas, among others, also entered the main stage earlier that day.
Find out the rest about when they’ll hopefully play and what stage they’d be on below.

When are Arctic Monkeys performing at Glastonbury?
Movingly, Arctic Monkeys will be the first headliners of Glastonbury 2023, closing the first day of this year’s festival.
They were scheduled to follow Royal Blood on Friday, June 23, and are expected to play for an hour and a half starting at approximately 10:15 p.m.
This is of course a very prestigious slot, with Billie Eilish occupying this spot a year ago, and Radiohead and Stormzy also closing out opening night in recent years.
However, this is nothing new for the Sheffield band, who headlined on Fridays in 2013 and performed their other Glastonbury Friday night set six years earlier in 2007.
The main concern is the health of lead singer Alex Turner, whose ‘acute’ laryngitis caused the quartet to cancel their last performance before the festival.
The 37-year-old was told by his doctor to rest before their show in Dublin, and has not revealed how long he will have to take a break.

What stage would Arctic Monkeys perform on?
Arctic Monkeys hope to play the festival’s famous Pyramid Stage, which will be graced by Guns N’ Roses and Elton John later in the weekend.
It’s also where the foursome – made up of Turner, Jamie Cook, Nick O’Malley and Matt Helders – performed their other two performances at Worthy Farm.
Speak against NME after the 2013 performance, Turner said it was “one of the best performances we’ve ever done”, adding that “it’s a different beast, Glastonbury.”
The stage was first set up in 1971 and has since hosted a number of impressive acts, including Diana Ross, David Bowie and Oasis, to name a few.
Despite the great fame of Arctic Monkeys, Elton John is undoubtedly the most anticipated act to come to Glastonbury’s main venue this year, in his last ever live performance.
Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage is arguably the most prestigious place to perform on the UK festival circuit
What would they play?
The setlist isn’t announced until they hit the stage – fingers crossed they do.
However, recent shows on their tour indicate that a few of their new songs will be among many of the old favourites.
In their most recent set, at the Emirates Stadium on June 18, the only tracks from the latest album were The Car Perfect Sense, There’d Better Be a Mirrorball and Body Paint.
This performance also included these classics:
- Brian storm
- Howling lightning
- Fluorescent adolescent
- I want to know
- Mardy Boom
- I bet you look good on the dance floor
- Are you mine?
What is Laryngitis?
Laryngitis, the culprit for all the doubts about the appearance of Arctic Monkeys at Glastonbury, refers to a swollen larynx – larynx – or vocal cords.
It tends to result in a hoarse and hoarse or even lost voice, with a cough to boot, which is why it’s understandable that it had such potentially fatal consequences for part of the Arctic Monkeys summer tour.
The swelling is often caused by a viral infection, meaning any case of the illness often coincides with other cold or flu symptoms.
Allergies are also a common culprit.
How long does it take to recover from this?
Laryngitis usually comes on suddenly and gets worst within three days, before clearing up on its own within a week or two.
With the band last performing just five days before the Glastonbury date, it’s clear why there’s been such panic over who’ll be at Worthy Farm on Friday.
However, symptoms can be improved with the health service suggest typical cough medicines and lozenges.
The band last performed only five days ago, so with laryngitis tending to take a week or two to get over, doubts about their Glastonbury performance are certainly valid
Who is rumored to replace Arctic Monkeys?
Fans have suggested Harry Styles as the ideal Arctic Monkeys replacement for Friday.
The former One Direction man has a well-timed gap in his own tour schedule that would theoretically allow him to play in Somerset.
An appearance for the 29-year-old was due to come shortly after playing in Cardiff.
‘Only a two-hour drive from Glasto. He’s the perfect replacement,” one fan wrote on Twitter, highlighting how close Cardiff are to Glastonbury.
Dua Lipa, Eminem and Pulp are also all touted as potential secret artists.
