An American couple is slapped with a glitzy $860 bill at the famous Mykonos restaurant

An American couple received a dazzling $860 bill after a meal and drinks at a famous Mykonos restaurant where the owner defends exorbitant prices.
Jessica Yarnall, 31, and Adam Hagaun, 30, from Montana, say they thought the cocktails cost €25 each when they ordered at the DK Oyster bar on Platys Gialos beach in Mykonos.
However, the couple say that after enjoying two mojitos, four crab legs and a Greek salad, they were handed a bill for 800 euros.
When contesting the bill, they claimed that staff produced a ‘shot’ drink which they said was an example of the €25 mojito and were informed that their mojitos were different, at €100 per drink.
It is not the first time that the restaurant catches tourists off guard. Alex and Lindsey Breen, 40, from Canada, were stunned to receive a bill of 400 euros ($410) after going for a “quick bite” on their honeymoon in May.

They ordered four crab legs, a Greek salad and a mojito each and were shocked at the exorbitant bill.
Hairstylist Jessica says she was incredulous at the staggering sum, but said the staff insisted they paid, so they paid the bill in cash and left.
Jessica and construction worker Adam spent two years saving for the trip and traveled to Athens, Mykonos and Santorini in May 2022 before flying back to Montana, USA.
He stressed that they had only sat down to eat because the menu seemed affordable.
Jessica said: “There were waiters outside trying to get people in. They asked if we wanted to eat and we said we’d order a drink.”
“I asked for a menu with prices to make sure it was within our price range. The menu made it look like a really affordable place to eat.
“We sit down and talk about whether or not to eat. They were very pushy. We thought maybe that’s the way it is and we didn’t want to be rude.
“We asked what was good and they said crab legs and Greek salad, so we said ‘okay let’s think about that’ and then they brought rolls.”
“We told them we hadn’t ordered anything yet and they said yes. There was a bit of a language barrier so we thought when we said we’d think about it he thought we meant yes so when we were trying to work out how much it was going to cost they started bringing the food and said we definitely ordered this.
“It was a blunt moment where we didn’t want to be weird, but we were also trying to relax. We didn’t want to get into an argument with yours truly.
“When he walked away I asked my boyfriend if he was okay eating it and he said yes, I told him it would probably be a bit expensive and he said we should.”
DK Oyster bar owner Dimitrios Kalamaras (pictured) said Jessica’s account was inaccurate
Jessica and Adam (pictured) had been saving for their dream trip to Greece for two years.
“I thought worst case scenario it would be $300. We expected it to be a bit more expensive, but not as much with the quality of the food.
‘Adam got the bill and said “it’s bad”. It was over €800 and I thought “absolutely not” so I went to the manager and told him that he was really confused and wanted to see an itemized bill.
When discussing the bill, Jessica says she googled her menu and it showed it said €25 for a mojito, but her bill said €100.
Jessica said: “It seemed €38 for a crab leg, it was €38 for a gram of crab leg and there is a minimum you have to order.”
“He came to the bar and knocked over a shot glass and said ‘that’s a €25 mojito, you ordered a €100 mojito’ and I said no and they didn’t give me any options.
They charged €100 for the most disgusting mojito, the mint one was not good. That was disgusting.
He said we were going to pay the bill. She didn’t want to have a conversation. They said we had to pay the bill.
“We were so taken aback we thought we’d just pay the damn bill and get out of there. We were super upset.
On its website, DK Oyster beachside Platys Gialos describes itself as the “destination for luxury and style” in “one of the best destinations in the world.”
Jessica says that while they were at the beach bar they saw other customers “freaked out” by their own bills.
Jessica says that thanks to the skyrocketing bill, the couple had to cut back on expenses for the rest of the trip.
She claims that in addition to being the most expensive meal they had, it was also the worst.
Jessica said: “The Greek salad was vegetable and oil so it wasn’t complicated, but it wasn’t the best we’d ever had, it got gross really fast.” I’m no chef but I think the crab legs tasted [bad]It wasn’t amazing and it wasn’t even worth €100.
‘The holiday was very good apart from this experience, everything else was 11 out of 10. We saved a lot for the trip. We have been saving for two years. When we go, we want to have a good experience.
‘When we got back to the hotel, no one on the island heard from me that day. God bless my boyfriend who said we shouldn’t let money ruin the rest of the trip, but I did a TikTok video and about ten reviews, then we tried to make the most of the rest of the trip.
We would have made some nicer dinners and spent that money somewhere else we would have chosen. We would have splurged elsewhere and not worried about spending.
It is not the first time that the DK Oyster bar surprises tourists, with negative reviews and previous complaints.

One reviewer wrote: ‘Don’t be fooled by their free beachside beds. They recoup the cost by charging you overpriced drinks and food! Their mojito is $58 each and it’s not even good.’
Another says: ‘I’m not going to get hot under the collar, since I’ve been there and done that. This is a warning notice not to enter these facilities under any circumstances.
Unless you want to give away your money for ridiculously expensive food and drink. Seriously, be careful with this money pit.
DK Oyster bar owner Dimitrios Kalamaras said Jessica’s account was inaccurate, but declined to say what was inaccurate; However, he acknowledged that some of her fees can “be perceived as high prices.”
In August another couple named Lindsay and Alex Breen made headlines when they claimed they had been paid a staggering €400 bill for a beer, an Aperol spritz and a dozen oysters at the same restaurant.
Recruiter Lindsay said they were “in disbelief” when they saw the tab, as restaurant staff had given them a drinks menu that did not include prices.
The couple also claim that instead of being presented with the bill at the table, the carpenter Alex was taken to a back room to pay and when he asked for a breakdown, he was shown his computer screen, which was in Greek.
However, Kalamaras defended his prices at the time, boasting that they are simply “beyond the budget” of some of his visitors.
Kalamaras said in August: “This false claim [made by Lindsay Breen and husband Alex] It has been so used against our restaurant by dozens of anonymous users on Trip Advisor, that we decided to place three huge blackboards at the entrance of the restaurant showing the menu and prices.
“I thought this way our guests, if the reviews were written by actual customers, would at least have an idea of our price range to make sure they check the menu thoroughly before ordering.
‘Whenever I have received such a complaint, always from anonymous users via Trip Advisor, I have consulted with staff, remembering that it is crucial to our reputation to ensure procedures are carefully followed.
“They always assured me that they respect the rules. Therefore, I used Tripadvisor to encourage our guests to always carefully browse the menu and prices.
‘I cannot stop all the people who enter our facilities and explain the meaning of such a practice. It would be ridiculous.
‘I understand that some people may find our prices beyond their budget and I fully respect their opinion even if they do not appreciate the value of our services, cuisine, concept and experience.
“We believe that the value of the experience offered is high and we have no intention of explaining why we charge more than a supermarket or a traditional tavern, which may be quite wonderful but surely is a completely different concept from ours.”
