A Connecticut woman fears going broke after opening a new breakfast cafe called WOKE that angered locals, but insists the name is just a reference to getting out of bed.
- Carmen Quiroga was scrutinized for naming her breakfast coffee Woke
- Some locals assumed that the name of the restaurant referred to the political term.
- Quiroga recently opened the cafe and feared that his business would be affected.
A restaurant owner fears her new business will be tainted after receiving backlash for naming the new breakfast restaurant Woke.
Carmen Quiroga opened her little breakfast shack in Coventry earlier this month anticipating selling loads of pancakes, eggs and bacon, but was met with discord instead.
Coventry residents assumed that the local cafe got its name from the political term ‘awakening’, which originally meant being aware of prejudice and injustice, but is now often used to explain progressive behavior that people find performative and extreme.
But Quirgo says that’s not true and that the name is just a reference to people who start their day looking for breakfast at places like hers.
Quiroga worries that nasty Facebook posts about her will ruin the business immediately if there isn’t a fair chance.
“They don’t give me the opportunity to try my food and my work,” said Quiroga WTNH.

Quiroga saw the cruel comments on a private Facebook page for the town. Several people were quick to overlook the true meaning behind the name, which is to “wake up and have coffee,” according to the news outlet.
He claimed that he had no idea what the political definition of “awakening” meant.
The cafe owner left her in tears as she read the comments that have since been discouraged on the page.
“Just a word of warning, all ridiculous comments about the name of the new breakfast place in town will be removed,” the page admin wrote.
Several people took to Woke’s Facebook page to support Quiroga’s new business after news of the backlash.
Photos showing the cafe’s breakfast offerings were inundated with comments promising to support Quiroga’s business.
“I saw your story on the news in Boston and I’m so sorry that people gave such a simple and fun name negativity,” one person wrote. ‘If we ever go to Connecticut, we’ll have breakfast at Woke!’
“That looks absolutely delicious,” one person commented under photos of the cafe’s pancakes. ‘I wish I lived closer. Congratulations on the new business and nice to see you. People are giving you the support you deserve.’
Others left encouraging comments after eating at the cafe, while others expressed excitement about trying the food.

Quiroga explained that Facebook’s argument did not represent the city of Coventry. The locals echoed his statement and seemed unbothered by the name.
“For me, when I hear ‘Woke’ as a breakfast restaurant, it just means to wake me up, so it doesn’t offend me personally,” resident Benjamin Kieso told the news outlet.
“It’s a catchy name,” added Brian Pope.
