Return of commuters to city centers boosts Caffe Nero as sales rise above pre-pandemic levels

Business at Caffe Nero has brightened as commuters returned to city centers post-Covid.

The coffee chain, which has more than 610 stores in Britain, said UK sales in the six months between June and November were £150 million, above pre-pandemic levels.

The company also posted its best-ever week early last month with sales of £7.9m for the week of December 5.

While the return of workers to offices and travelers to train stations has boosted business, Caffe Nero has also benefited from strong demand for deliveries thanks to partnerships with Deliveroo and Just Eat, in addition to an existing deal with Uber Eats.

Overall, UK sales in the six months to November were 17 per cent higher than the same period in 2021, when city centers were devastated by the Omicron variant of Covid.

“Sales grew as the year progressed, demonstrating the strength of our brand and customers’ desire to come back once health restrictions are lifted,” said CEO Gerry Ford, who founded the brand in 1997.

“We expect sales to improve further in the coming weeks and months.”

Caffe Nero is also active abroad. The company has 1,023 stores in ten countries, including the UK, and total sales were £231 million in the six-month period, 20 percent more than a year earlier.
