SANTAQUIN, Utah — A 5-year-old Utah boy died Thursday after accidentally shooting himself with a firearm in a small town south of Salt Lake City, police said.
Santaquin Police Lt. Mike Wall said KSL-TV the boy found a 9mm pistol in the back room of his home and fired one shot. the boy’s parents and siblings were inside when the shooting occurred, but were not in the room with him.
They tried to revive him until emergency services arrived, but he died at the scene. Authorities do not suspect foul play and investigators are trying to determine how the boy obtained the weapon.
No further information was released, and a police spokesman did not immediately respond to a call from The Associated Press on Thursday evening.
Santaquin is located approximately 60 miles south of Salt Lake City.
