Speaking about taking on the role of Rita, Zoë told the panel Term: ‘It was important to understand where Rita came from and who she really was.

‘To me she is someone who doesn’t have the courage to speak for herself. She’s underemployed, overlooked, and desperate for change, but she wants power, she wants influence, and she wants success.

“It was important for me to understand that this was a Faustian deal that she would immediately accept – and never look back – because she is also going through a transition.

‘It is not as clearly accentuated, intense and rich as Emilia’s [transition]’, but she really sheds her old skin and becomes a different person by the time Emilia meets her again three years later.’

Zoe’s appearance comes after the actress looked stunning in a strapless blue satin dress as she attended a screening of the film at The Royal Festival Hall on Friday.

She joined her co-star Selena Gomez on the red carpet, looking sensational in a figure-hugging floor-length dress.

The American singer and actress, 32, stars as Jessi Del Monte, wife of Emilia Perez, while Karla Sofía Gascón plays Jessi.

The film’s plot reads on IMDb: “In Mexico, a lawyer receives an unexpected offer to help a feared cartel boss retire and disappear forever by becoming the woman he always dreamed of.”

Emilia Perez first premiered in May at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, where the film competed for the Palme d’Or.

The project ultimately won the Jury Prize at the festival, while the female ensemble won the Best Actress award.

In August, the musical crime comedy was released in theaters in France – and will be available on Netflix in the US and UK from November 13.

The film was also selected as the French entry for Best International Feature Film for the upcoming 97th Academy Awards.

Gold Derby predicted that Saldana is currently likely to win an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for the film.

The nominees for the elite awards have not yet been announced, but Saldana and others have already racked up plenty of awards for their performances over the past year.

Variety previously reported that Saldana and her co-star Selena will pursue Oscar nominations in the supporting actress category, while Karla will compete for a lead actress nomination.

Gold Derby isn’t the only publication eyeing an Oscar nomination for Saldana.

She currently sits at number one on a list of predicted nominees from Variety, while her Emilia Perez co-star Selena comes in fifth.
