Zoe Saldana has clarified her comments about being ‘stuck’ in sci-fi franchise movies.
The 44-year-old actress recently lamented how roles in Avatar, Star Trek and the Marvel Cinematic Universe had limited her creatively, but has now retracted her comments.
On Monday, the Avatar: The Way of Water star attended the highly-anticipated film’s Los Angeles premiere and spoke to reporters.
She said that she is grateful to have had the opportunity to work on big blockbusters. “I would love to set the record straight,” she said. “I’m so grateful for the opportunities I’ve been given, from collaborating with amazing directors and meeting cast members I consider friends to being able to play a role that fans, especially kids, love.
“But it also meant that I felt artistically trapped in my craft of not being able to expand or grow or challenge myself by playing different kinds of genres and different roles.”
Zoe also told Deadline this week that she found it difficult to juggle her franchise responsibilities with raising children.
She has twins Cy and Bowie, eight, and Zen, six, with her husband Marco Perego.

“But you know, I think once I started a family, it became really hard for me to maintain both worlds and also satisfy this curiosity of playing different characters or playing Earthlings,” he told Deadline.
“You know, but I’m happy in space,” he added to the site. I have always been happy in space. I also hang out with people who love space.’
He said he relates to directors like James Gunn and James Cameron as they all see themselves as “misfits”.
She said, “I feel grateful and feel like the luckiest girl in this town to know that I was invited to join movies with special directors in a special cast.”
The Guardians of the Galaxy actress said: “I identify with guys like James Gunn and James Cameron and JJ Abrams and Steven Spielberg.
‘Because maybe there’s a common thread, maybe there’s something we all have in common of knowing what it’s like to be a misfit, and growing up feeling like you don’t belong and finding that space created that blank canvas, where you can imagine the unimaginable.
She continued: “And the fact that they saw me, a girl from Queens, and I can do those things for them, I can only be so thankful if they call me over and over again.”
Avatar: The Way of the Water will open the theatrical release of the long-awaited sequel on December 16.
