Bluey scene confuses American mother: ‘Why do they paint on the beach?’
- An American mother was confused by colored lines on Bluey and Bingo on the beach
- She eventually discovered that they were using zinc sunscreen
An American mother scratched her head after encountering a ‘strange’ act on the popular Australian children’s show Bluey.
Jessica, a mother from the US, was extremely baffled when she saw strange colored lines that she thought were face paint on the characters Bluey and Bingo.
“Okay mamas, American mama here,” Jessica said in the post. “Is the face paint on the beach just for Aussie? And what is it? I would like to buy beach face paint for my children.”
Many were shocked that the mother was not familiar with the tinted sunscreen and soon told her about its importance.

“It’s tinted zinc sunscreen,” one mother said. “We wear it on top of normal sunscreen for extra protection.”
Thick, strong sunblock. The colored ones come in like a stick – like a lip balm that winds up – and are used in heavily affected areas of the sun to prevent sunburn,” added another.
“Cricketers wear white zinc on their faces all the time,” another commented.

One man said, “I’m actually sheer and I remember my mom telling me it would make me a Ninja Turtle to encourage me to wear it.”
Others from around the world also shared their experiences with zinc sunscreen.
“I live in the US and it honestly amazes me how many people have never seen zinc sunscreen,” said one woman.
“It’s zinc and it’s not just an Australian thing – a lot of people in the US are doing it too,” another American added.
Another said, “Definitely not an Aussie thing – when you were growing up in 1980s California, if you didn’t wear a few different colors of zinc, you weren’t cool.”
“I am South African and we had zinc suntan sticks in neon colors,” one woman wrote.

People tend to apply zinc to the most vulnerable areas of their faces, such as the nose, lips, cheekbones, and ears.
Several athletes often use zinc while playing long competitions in the sun.
