Luka Modric went from zero to hero in 32 seconds in Croatia’s crucial Group B clash with Italy at the 2024 European Championship.

After a goalless first half, Croatia were awarded a penalty in the 54th minute following a Davide Frattesi handball, and the 38-year-old veteran stepped up to give his side the lead.

But his penalty was weak and easily cleared by Gianluigi Donnarumma, leaving Modric devastated. But he could hardly have made up for it any faster.

Croatia regained possession and launched another attack, with Donnarumma making another fine save to deny Ante Budimir. However, his parry fell at the feet of Modric, who made no mistake this time.

His goal sparked wild celebrations for the jubilant Croatian fans as Modric fell to the ground and was mobbed by his teammates after a remarkable passage of play.

Modric’s goal earned him a place in European Championship history as he became the tournament’s oldest ever goalscorer.

He will turn 39 in September and Euro 2024 is expected to be his last major tournament.

The midfielder was hoping to go out with a bang after finishing second and third respectively at the last two World Cups.

But Croatia made a poor start to the tournament, losing 3-0 to Spain before being held to a 2-2 draw by Albania.

Heading into Tuesday’s match, they knew they had to beat Italy to overtake their Group B opponents and secure a place in the last 16.

Modric may have ensured his tournament is not over by keeping his cool after experiencing the ultimate low of missing a penalty on the biggest stage.
