Jets quarterback Zach Wilson was benched after another dismal performance in New York’s 32-6 loss to AFC East rival Buffalo Bills.

Wilson finished the game with 7-15, 81 yards, one touchdown, one interception and a 57.9 passer rating before being benched for backup quarterback Tim Boyle with 2:17 left in the third quarter.

The 24-year-old QB was benched several times last season by Jets head coach Robert Saleh due to repeated poor performances before being demoted to backup after the Jets acquired Aaron Rodgers in the offseason.

Wilson was then inserted back into the lineup after Rodgers was injured just four games into the season, leading the team to a 4-6 record while throwing for 183-306, 1,863 yards, five touchdowns and six interceptions.

“I’m frustrated, but I understand,” Wilson said after sitting on the bench after the game. ‘I have to score, I have to participate in matches. If it’s consecutive games where you don’t do anything in attack… we won’t score.’

‘When things don’t work out, changes have to happen and I understand that.

Before Wilson recorded a touchdown pass to running back Breece Hall during the second quarter of action, the Jets had gone twelve quarters without scoring a touchdown, but Saleh had continued to back the struggling young signal caller.

Of Sunday’s offensive disaster, Wilson said: “Yeah, it just felt like one of those games where we couldn’t do anything. It felt like one of those games where everything felt really difficult. I thought the coaches had a good game plan
everyone is struggling, but it felt tough today.”

During his post-match press conference, Saleh changed his tune for one of the few times this season as he condemned the foul. “I don’t think anyone did anything today,” he said before adding, “It’s definitely an offense that needs to get better.” Let’s put it this way.’

Saleh still managed to praise Boyle’s efforts during his few minutes of action towards the end of the match.

‘I thought Tim [Boyle] came in, he was decisive, he lost the ball…He did some good things,” Saleh told reporters after the match.

After checking into the game, Boyle was 7-14, 33 yards and an interception

Saleh also stated that he was not ready to make a decision on the quarterback position moving forward. Besides Boyle, the Jets also have journeyman QB Trevor Siemian on their practice squad.

One of Saleh’s most telling answers – or non-answers – regarding the QB situation came after a reporter informed him that Wilson failed to complete a pass to one of the Jets wide receivers during the game and the then-coach asked ‘how is that even possible. ‘

Saleh replied, “I don’t have an answer to that. Of course we’ll go back and watch the whole tape. None of it, whether it’s separation, more decisiveness,… none of it was good enough.”

Wilson also stumbled while running toward the huddle in the second quarter.
