Zach Wilson is once again the New York Jets' starting quarterback, just days after reports surfaced claiming the struggling third-year signal caller was opposed to returning to the top of the depth chart.
Head coach Robert Saleh made the announcement Wednesday as the team prepares to face the Houston Texans on Sunday in East Rutherford, New Jersey: “Zach gives us the best chance to win.”
Jets waived Tim Boyle after two starts and signed Brett Rypien from the Seattle Seahawks' practice squad on Tuesday in the team's latest shuffle at the quarterback position.
Boyle especially struggled when replacing Wilson for the past two games – both losses.
The Jets (4-8) are mired in a five-game losing streak and their offense has been unable to produce consistent results with Aaron Rodgers sidelined since tearing his left Achilles tendon with four ruptures in his debut with New York in the season opener .
Dianna Russini and Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic previously reported that Wilson was reluctant to return to the starting role.

Rodgers ripped that report and defended Wilson during his weekly interview with ESPN's Pat McAfee.
'I love the child. I spent a lot of time with him. I think he's a great young man… and he's young, he's in his early 20s,” Rodgers said on radio. Pat McAfee Show.
“He's been through a lot of things over the last three years, and he has every right to be frustrated and disappointed about it.
“I'll say this when you have sources, right, and that's always interesting,” Rodgers continued. “First of all, you can go down a whole rabbit hole of factual sources, made-up sources, why is someone willing to be a source?
'What do they gain from that? But when you use sources, intentionally or unintentionally, and try to assassinate someone's character, as that report for Zach does, I have a very hard time with that.”
“I mean, you're basically saying this guy quit the team, doesn't want to play anymore and has given the middle finger to the organization.”

Wilson was benched after the team's Nov. 19 loss to Buffalo, but the team continued to struggle with backups Boyle and Trevor Siemian under center. Both Boyle and Siemian played in Sunday's loss to the visiting Atlanta Falcons as the Jets fell to 4-8 on the season.
The third-year quarterback has notoriously struggled since replacing Rogers in Week 1, when the former Super Bowl winner went down with a torn Achilles tendon. While Rodgers continues to make progress in his rehabilitation, he previously said he will not attempt to return in 2023 unless the Jets are in the playoffs, which no longer appears to be the case.
For the season, Wilson is 3-6 to start while completing just 59.2 percent of his passes for 1,944 yards, six touchdowns and seven picks.

And things didn't get any better for the Jets quarterbacks on Sunday.
Siemian replaced a benched Boyle in the fourth quarter of the Jets' latest loss, dropping a 13-8 decision to the Atlanta Falcons.
“As an offense, we do our best in practice,” running back Dalvin Cook said. “You get looks, we do things in practice and you expect it to translate into the game, and we just don't have that translation right now.
“So it's frustrating.”
