Yuri!!! on Ice film canceled after 7 years of production

The long pregnancy Yuri!!! on ice movie has been officially canceled. The film was announced in 2017, although there has been little news on the production front since then. After a short teaser in 2018 and a take note in 2020the production team finally announced the cancellation on X this Friday.

Regarding the delayed release of Yuri!!! On Ice the movie: Ice Adolescence, we are dealing with the decision to unfortunately cancel production.

We deeply apologize for not being able to meet the expectations of all those who have waited and continued to support us over the years.

The production committee and staff have been in constant discussions about the making and delivery of the film, but due to various circumstances we have had to make the difficult decision to halt production.

We sincerely apologize to everyone who expected to be released and thank you again for your continued support.

Yuri!!! on ice premiered in 2016 and ran for 12 episodes. It follows Yuri Katsuki, the titular anxious figure skater (and also winner of Polygon’s inaugural Who Would Win Week race in 2022), in his quest to win the Figure Skating Grand Prix. After a devastating loss, Yuri initially retires, but when his figure skating idol, the talented and very handsome Victor Nikiforov, shows up at his door and offers to become his coach, Yuri takes a gamble. Along the way, romantic feelings blossom between the two.

The film would put the spotlight on Victor’s teenage years. The anime never really delved into his backstory, but it was pretty clear that his adolescence was full of hard training. He’s completely cold as he leaves everything to follow Yuri, so there mustn’t have been much to keep him in Russia.

But now that the film has been officially canceled, any glimpse into Victor’s past will have to come from theories. We will always have fan fiction – and the official artwork released by the production team in 2022, where Yuri and Viktor sit tenderly together on the sidelines of a match.
