TV and radio presenter Yumi Stynes may be forced to face her ex-husband in court following his decision to challenge a restraining order proposed by police.
Stynes was in Bondi Beach with her two youngest children on Wednesday afternoon after the case was briefly mentioned in Downing Center Local Court.
Her ex-husband, Martin Bendeler, had instructed a lawyer to indicate that he would oppose a police request for an apprehended violence warrant.
If the matter makes it to a hearing, Stynes and Bendeler will be pitted against each other and likely required to give testimony before a magistrate.
A provisional AVO was imposed on December 20 after Stynes allegedly told police he feared for his safety. That came 14 months after she announced the couple’s separation.

Police have removed an AVO on behalf of Stynes against her ex-husband Martin Bendeler after she claimed his alleged behavior led her to fear for her safety. The former couple in the photo.
Under the terms of the order, Bendeler must not assault, threaten, stalk, harass or intimidate Stynes, damage his property or harm any pets he owns.
He has not been accused of doing any of those things and was not present when the temporary order was approved.
Bendeler is a former adviser on environment and aid policy in the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet and has worked with UNESCO.

It is understood that the former couple was trying to become parents to their children until Stynes, who co-hosts a radio show on KIIS FM, filed a complaint with the police.
Stynes broke down in tears live on KIIS FM’s 3pm Pick-Up in late October 2021 when he shared heartbreaking details of the split.
She said she had moved out of the marital home and into her own apartment, telling her co-hosts that it was overwhelming to be a single mom for the second time.
“I’m going through a separation right now and there are children involved and my ex is involved, so I don’t want to say anything to hurt these people,” she said.
‘I had to find an apartment, I had to move my things, all my garbage is in boxes and bags… I had to change my address, throw away the keys that no longer work…
It’s been a lot. I spent the weekend moving and I feel like I am now starting my new life as a single mom. Here I am again.’

Stynes said she wasn’t ready to tell the full story of the breakup, but hoped she’d still be processing her grief for another year.
“I have hundreds and thousands of words to say, but I don’t think I’m ready yet,” she told listeners.
Breakups don’t end quickly. I’ll probably be in this process for another year… I’ll probably have ups and downs in the future.’
Stynes asked Bendeler to marry her on February 29, the “leap day” that occurs every four years on which women traditionally propose to men.

She was previously married to Ben Ely of the Brisbane rock band Regurgitator from 2000 to 2008. They have two children, Anouk and Dee Dee.
Stynes wrote an article for ABC in 2020 about staying friends with an ex based on your shared parenting experience with Ely.
He encouraged people to “take time to separate when it first happens, foster mutual respect, and redraw the boundaries of your relationship.”
“Breaking up ‘good’ is not something you think about when you’re in the throes of new love,” she wrote.
“And when it all falls apart, there’s no need to be friendly, unless you share something vital, like a business, friends, a creative project, or in our case, kids.”
The AVO application returns to court next month.
