According to the experts, jeans only need to be washed every six to ten times.

However, news that will shock many women is that bras should be washed every two to three wears.

“But for everything else, it’s a little more controversial.

“If your clothes are dirty or smelly, it’s generally time to wash them.”

Which one? has released guidelines on how often you should wash 15 common wardrobe items, including underwear, skirts, swimwear, hats and gloves.

“The question is: if it’s not dirty and it doesn’t smell, should it be washed?” said the consumer champion.

‘For medical and hygienic reasons, it is about finding the right balance.

‘For example, if you have eczema and want to avoid irritation from bacteria, washing your clothes may be more important to you.

“But if you wash your clothes too often, they won’t last as long.”

Which one? recommends washing your underwear, socks, workout gear and swimwear after just one wear.

However, you may be surprised to learn that several other items have seen very little wear before needing to be washed.

Many women will probably be shocked to hear that bras need to be washed every two to three wears.

Georgina Bibby, lingerie tech expert at clothing store Next, agrees with Which?’s advice.

“It depends on the wearer and your daily activities, but it’s a good general rule to wash your bra after every two to three wears,” she previously said.

‘In addition to maintaining your bras, you should also look at replacing the old ones.

‘The general rule of thumb is to replace a bra after about 180 wears.’

Pajamas can be worn three to four times before they need to be washed, while you can get away with wearing sweatshirts and skirts about five to seven times.

This goes against the advice of Levi’s design director Paul O’Neill, who says he washes his jeans cold every “30 to 50 wears” and never puts them in the dryer.

Finally, coats only need to be washed once or twice per season, while hats and gloves can be washed two to three times per season.
