- Despite the healthy interaction, the criminal stole the $1,300 bike
- San Diego police are calling on the public to help identify the man
The San Diego Police Department shared video of a bizarre incident in which a burglar stopped to lovingly pet a golden retriever before stealing the owner’s $1,300 electric bicycle.
In the video, the man can be seen entering a lit and open garage before attempting to stealthily drive the expensive bike away – but before he can, he is stopped by the friendly dog.
The crook was seen riding the bike back into the garage, putting it on the kickstand and starting rubbing the dog’s belly while telling him, “You’re the coolest dog ever!”
The sane moment didn’t deter the scammer, who quickly got back to work and took off on his bike.
Lieutenant Brian Brecht of the San Diego Police Department described it as a “very unique situation.”
A burglar stopped briefly to affectionately pet a golden retriever before stealing the owner’s $1,300 electric bicycle. He is depicted rubbing the dog’s belly
The golden retriever excitedly pounced on the crook as he left with the owner’s electric bicycle
“The man enters the garage, grabs the bike and starts to walk out. He’s about five feet outside the garage door and a golden retriever comes out into the garage and follows the man out,” he said. NBC7.
“He comes right back in, parks the bike and starts playing with the dog.”
The incident happened on July 15 at around 10:40 p.m. on Diamond Street in the Pacific Beach area of San Diego.
The burglar was wearing a blue and white hat, a gray shirt, blue shorts and orange sneakers. He was wearing a black and blue backpack at the time.
The criminal also alluded to the theft, saying to the dog, “Where is your father?” Your father can’t leave the garage door open.’
“You have too much shit, how do you have so much shit in your house? Why do you have all that stuff? Dude, you might be the coolest dog ever.”
The burglar told the dog it was the “coolest dog ever” and suggested that the owner was clumsy to leave a garage full of so many valuables open and unlocked
After pausing for about ten seconds to look, the dog ran after the crook and left the camera’s field of view
He then rode the bike off before hopping on the saddle. After a pause of about ten seconds to look, the dog then ran after the intruder and left the camera’s field of view.
In a statement accompanying the footage, the San Diego Police Department noted that the bike had several distinguishing features.
“This is not your average bike, it is distinctive, with ‘8-ball’ caps on the valves, an ‘8-ball’ logo on the frame and a rear wheel frame marked with a checkered black and white pattern,” it reads.
“We are still looking for the subject. That’s why we advertised this on social media, but hopefully we can get some tips from the public,” said Brecht.
