Harry Maguire’s mother has fiercely defended her son and condemned the ‘disgraceful’ treatment of the Manchester United defender.
Maguire was already mocked by the Scottish fans before scoring an own goal in England’s 3-1 win at Hampden Park on Tuesday night after coming on at half-time.
Gareth Southgate blamed the ‘ridiculous’ criticism 30-year-old Maguire has received from England and United fans – who have booed the player at times – and some sections of the media.
Maguire’s mother Zoe was in Hampden and wrote on social media yesterday: ‘It is not acceptable what is being created over nothing.’
Maguire has remained a regular in England despite having fallen down the pecking order of United’s centre-backs since Erik ten Hag took over as manager last year.
