Your Fitbit app can now show stats from other wearables and services
As part of a recent Android feature release, the Fitbit app will now display data from external sources to give users a “more complete picture of (their) health.”
Google reported this in a recent announcement it effectively extends the reach of Health Connect, allowing it to collect metrics “from your favorite wearables and apps.” These sources include AllTrials, the Oura Ring, plus nutritional data from MyFitnessPal. On the Today tab of the Fitbit app, you’ll see a new section called Records, where you can see all Health Connect information in detail.
When you watch the demo video, you will see data such as calories burned per day, distance traveled, floor climbing, and body measurements, among other things. Tapping an item will take you to a statistics readout. For example, if you go to ‘Steps’ you will see how many steps you have taken in a day, week, month and year, along with a daily average.
Data that comes from an external source will have the service’s logo next to it. The aforementioned Steps section has an Oura ring symbol next to it, while Elevation Gained has the AllTrials icon next to it. It is important to note that there may be a discrepancy in the information displayed. 9To5Google explains in its coverage: “data in Health Connect may not match the metrics you see on your Fitbit devices.”
Android feature drop
The update is currently being rolled out alongside eight other features. To briefly review them, there are WearOS smartwatches that get public transportation directions via Google Maps, plus support for Google Wallet passes. Google Messages will soon host the company’s Gemini chatbot, allowing you to have direct conversations with the AI. And the Android home screen gets an output switch for Spotify, allowing subscribers to change where their media plays. You can switch seamlessly between a smartphone, headphones or a smart TV.
We reached out to Google to ask if the only third-party resources that Health Connect has access to are All Trials, an Oura Ring, and MyFitnessPal, or if there are more. This story will be updated at a later date.
