- Young woman has a stroke in her sleep
- She couldn’t move or talk
Courtney Grant was one day away from starting her dream job in real estate.
Although the 20-year-old had suffered from migraines and vomiting in recent months, she was overjoyed about her rising career and put the ongoing illness out of her mind.
Then her excitement turned to sheer terror on February 25, when she woke up in her Bray Park home in Brisbane, paralyzed on her right side and unable to speak.
Mrs Grant had suffered a stroke and a vital artery on the right side of her neck was now blocking critical blood flow.

She finally managed to get out of bed, but fell straight to the floor.
She was still unable to call for help and feared that her mother, who was sleeping in the next room, would soon find her dead.
‘It took me twenty minutes to try to call. My mother came rushing in when I was loud enough for her to finally hear my moans,” Ms Grant told the paper Courier mail.
Paramedics rushed Mrs Grant to hospital where she underwent emergency surgery to remove a blood clot from her groin.
Doctors could not tell Mrs. Grant’s mother whether her daughter would ever walk, talk or speak again.
But five days later, Ms. Grant was able to move again and respond to questions.

She diagnosed vasculitis – a condition that affects blood flow to tissues and organs – and was almost certainly the cause of her mysterious migraines and nausea.
“I have a long way to go with various appointments and rehabilitation, but I have been told there is little to no chance of this happening again,” Ms Grant said.
‘I have so much fear at the thought of this happening again and I have tried to erase some memories.
“I have so much respect and appreciation for my life and am focused on recovering in time for my 21st birthday later this year.”
The family has one GoFundMe page for Grant as she continues her recovery.
