A young Australian winemaker has just taken home a grand prize at a prestigious wine award ceremony for her $15 Shiraz.

At just 29 years old, Brenda Wentzel’s 2021 Bare Bones Great Western Shiraz scored 95 out of 100 points to win the trophy for the 2020 Best Vintage and Younger Shiraz category at this year’s Royal Adelaide Wine Show.

Brenda’s career in the wine industry spans over ten years and last year she created her first vintage in the Great Western region of South Australia under the Bare Bones label.

The Bare Bones Shiraz beat out nearly 200 other drops in its category and was chosen by a panel of expert judges over four days in a climate-controlled venue kept at a constant 21 degrees.

“The Great Western is one of my favorite wine regions in Australia, and so is Shiraz, so this is a very special prize to win,” said Brenda.

In 2011, Brenda started working for Pinnacle Drinks at their Dorrien Estate winery in the Barossa Valley.

In 2012, she went on to become a laboratory technician. She returned to work for Pinnacle Drinks in 2017 and graduated from Charles Sturt University’s wine science school in 2021.

Brenda then took over the Great Western and Heathcote portfolios from Pinnacle Drinks, where she and her team created the now award-winning 2021 Great Western Shiraz.

“Our growers always provide us with excellent fruit and everyone in our winemaking, cellar and laboratory teams is constantly supporting, guiding and guiding me,” she said.

Breda said Shiraz from the Great Western region is “elegant, generous and sophisticated.”

“Located right on the Great Dividing Range, the region is slightly elevated, allowing for hot afternoons and long, cool nights,” she said.

‘The wines have a wonderfully elevated character of black pepper, spices and licorice – some very exciting wines from the region, I love them.’
