A close relative of the couple involved in the first incident shared images on Facebook of the damage the stone caused.

The object pierced the windshield, causing the glass to fly over the two front seats.

Warwickshire Police are stepping up patrols in the area and plan to deploy police dog units as a further deterrent, as well as to ‘detect and detain offenders’.

Detective Chief Inspector James Rankin, who heads Rugby Police, said: ‘These were shocking incidents and I don’t need to explain the danger this reckless behavior poses to motorists.

Elsewhere in the country, incidents like this have killed motorists and their passengers and those responsible have received long prison terms for manslaughter.

“My team conducts a full investigation into every incident. We collect camera images, witness statements and investigate the location in detail.

“We have officers on foot patrol that area today and these patrols will now continue throughout the evening.

“We have also notified officers on vehicle patrols of these incidents and plans are in place to respond to incidents immediately.

Rugby officers will also visit local schools to inform students of the seriousness of this offence.

“These are incredibly serious offenses and we have plans to send dog units so that if this happens again, police dogs are immediately deployed to track down and detain offenders.

“What we have here is a small group of people who are happy to arm themselves effectively with bricks and stones, endangering the lives of the residents.

“They need to understand that a significant amount of resources, including police dogs, have now been allocated to catch them and they are already facing dire consequences.”
