On-the-go video editors can breathe a sigh of relief – Solve DaVinci for iPad is finally available in the App Store.

Announcement of the release on Twitter (opens in new tab), Blackmagic Design, the developers behind the video editing software, said: “DaVinci Resolve for iPad now available! Get the same color grading and editing tools used in Hollywood movies on iPad, plus Blackmagic Cloud multi-user collaboration, AI-based magic mask, voice isolation, dialogue leveler, and more.”

“The sleek, modern interface is quick to learn and easy for new users, yet powerful for pros,” said the breathtaking App Store article. Like its desktop counterpart, the iPad edition is available for free with almost no restrictions. The one-time premium upgrade costs just under $100 / £100.

Free video editing on iPad

Long considered some of the best free video editing software, the iPad version mirrors the professional desktop editor almost 1:1. That is a feat that is not even matched by Apple Final Cut Pro (although users can try Apple iMovie on iPad for an extraordinarily streamlined experience).

With the video editing software hitting drop on iPad, what’s likely to attract many content creators – aside from the non-existent price tag – is the ability to create Hollywood-quality productions without a powerful computer for video editing or laptop for video editing.

Blackmagic Design’s app-based editor works on iPad Pros running iPadOS 16 or later on an A12 Bionic chip or later. But to really get the best out of the tool, an M1 or M2 chip is recommended. The developers also note that previous iPad models may be limited to HD, with memory limitations limiting certain features.

In our recent preview of DaVinci Resolve for iPad, we were impressed with the real-time color grading, multi-track audio, AI tools, and timeline editing tools. However, we ran into a few bugs and glitches during the beta. Hopefully they are ironed out now video editing app is on general release.
