‘You’re a sad, desperate man’: Jamie Carragher blasts Richard Keys for calling him a ‘borderline racist’ for wanting an Englishman to run England, asking the disgraced presenter: ‘Is it because I work for Sky?’
Jamie Carragher has hit back at Richard Keys after the former Sky Sports presenter accused him of being a “borderline racist” for thinking the England national team should always be led by an Englishman.
Following England’s elimination from the World Cup at the hands of France, Gareth Southgate is considering his future in the dugout after six years in charge.
Thomas Tuchel, Mauricio Pochettino and Brendan Rodgers have been touted as possible replacements if Southgate leaves, but Carragher insisted on Tuesday morning that none of the trio should be considered due to their nationality.
Jamie Carragher believes the England manager should always be English
Richard Keys disagrees, believing that Carragher’s views on the matter “border on racism”.
Carragher responded, hinting that Keys was bitter about losing his job as a presenter for Sky.
“The England manager must always be English!” Carragher tweeted.
The former Liverpool defender’s statement caused a stir on social media and Keys lashed out at Carragher for his comments.
‘What kind of nonsense is this? It borders on racism,’ Keys responded.
‘The England manager should be the best person available. England should not hide behind borders and closed minds.
Carragher was unwilling to take Keys’ criticism, calling the 65-year-old a “sad and hopeless man.”
“Limit racism.” I hope you send similar tweets to a lot of like-minded journalists, or is it because I work for Sky!’ she replied.
You are a sad and desperate man.
Keys left Sky in disgrace in 2011 after being sacked for making sexist comments about referee Sian Massey-Ellis.
Keys was sacked by Sky in 2011 and now works for the Qatari-owned television channel beIN SPORTS.
He now works for Qatar-owned channel beIN SPORTS, while Carragher joined Sky as a pundit in 2013 following his retirement from football, and has hinted that Keys is still bitter about being let go by his former employers.
Others on social media have also pointed out how England coach Sarina Wiegman is Dutch and has achieved unprecedented success with the Lionesses after guiding them to European Championship glory in the summer.
Carragher may not get away with it, since sports mail revealed on Monday that the FA is open to appointing a foreign manager to succeed Southgate.
However, the FA are desperate to convince Southgate to serve out his contract until Euro 2024.
It is also understood that they would prefer to bring in an English manager if Southgate were to leave, with Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard seen as two potential candidates who could apply for the role.
