Yohanes Kidane found: Body of Netflix engineer recovered from San Francisco Bay two weeks after going missing – officials have ruled death a suicide

  • The body of missing Netflix engineer Yohanes S. Kidane was found on August 29
  • His death is ruled a suicide and he is believed to have drowned
  • Kidane had moved to the Bay Area just two weeks before his disappearance

The body of missing Netflix software engineer Yohanes S. Kidane, who disappeared from San Jose on August 14, has been found in the water near the Golden Gate Bridge.

Kidane’s body was recovered from San Francisco Bay on Tuesday, Aug. 29, after investigators received calls about an unconscious person in the water.

An autopsy confirmed that the body belonged to Kidane and ruled that the 22-year-old died of blunt force injuries and drowning as a contributing factor.

His death is ruled a suicide by the Marin County Sheriff’s Office said.

The recent graduate of Cornell University was reported missing in mid-August after failing to show up at his week-old job at the popular streaming service.

Kidane had moved to the area just two weeks prior to his disappearance on August 14, and his phone and wallet were found near the Golden Gate Bridge after his disappearance.

Yohanes S. Kidane’s body was found in the water on Tuesday, officials say, and investigators say there is currently no sign of foul play.

Kidane’s initially unidentifiable remains were found in the water near the Golden Gate Bridge

In a press release shared Wednesday, the Marin County Sheriff’s Office shed light on the Aug. 29 discovery of the 22-year-old’s body.

Initially, a call came in around 11:41 a.m. and coroners were dispatched to the scene along with members of the United States Coast Guard who pulled the body.

He was returned to land and pronounced dead by paramedics who did not attempt to resuscitate him “because of the victim’s physiological condition.”

“The remains showed signs of advanced decomposition, prolonged exposure to the aquatic environment and significant looting,” the press release said.

The body was so decomposed when recovered from the bay that its remains were unidentifiable and required further investigation by police and coroners.

However, Kidane’s identity was finally confirmed on August 31, and his next of kin were quickly notified of his discovery and death.

An autopsy was performed on September 1 and Kidane’s cause of death was determined to be ‘blunt injury with drowning’ as a contributing factor.

It is currently unknown what caused the blunt injuries on his body.

It’s also unclear why the coroner ruled Kidane’s death a suicide.
