Yes, that’s really the name of the Nintendo Switch 2, but I was hoping for a more exciting name
Yes, it’s finally official. The next Nintendo console will be called the Nintendo Switch 2, as demonstrated in the new reveal trailer.
If you haven’t managed to get your hands on the trailer yet, you can watch it below. And don’t forget to head over to our Nintendo Switch 2 live page for the latest news.
The branding is very similar to that of the original Nintendo Switch, albeit with a big, bold number two next to it. This lines up perfectly with the countless Nintendo Switch 2 leaks and rumors over the past few months, but honestly, I was hoping for something more exciting.
To me, Nintendo has always had an edge in branding across console generations. For example, the shift from the Nintendo DS to the Nintendo 3DS not only made it clear that the Nintendo 3DS was a new, more powerful console, but also highlighted one of its most important and exciting features.
Even the more conventionally named console successors, like the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, still felt unique. As an adjective, Super conveys a real sense of whimsy that, to me, just screams Nintendo.
The Nintendo Switch 2, on the other hand, feels sterile and follows the age-old naming scheme established by competitors like Sony with the PlayStation. It doesn’t tell me why I should be excited, or highlight its interesting features, including the apparent ability to use the new Joy-Con as a mouse, for example.
Yet it is not the end of the world. The excitement around the upcoming system seems to be high and I would be shocked if it doesn’t become a hit. I just hope whatever comes next has a name that’s a bit more exciting.
