Kevin Costner won’t get a chance to leave Yellowstone because the series ends instead. Shortly after reports that Costner had left the series, Paramount announced that the series will end after its fifth season, which would have been Costner’s last. But nothing can stop the Dutton family’s farming empire, so Paramount also announced a follow-up series featuring Matthew McConaughey talking to star.
The first half of YellowstoneThe fifth season, called part 1, has already been released, but in part 2, the series ran into problems. The second part of the season hasn’t finished filming yet, in part because of a reported feud between Costner and series co-creator Taylor Sheridan. This could be a blessing in disguise for Sheridan and Paramount, who can now use the second half of the season to pivot the show to its finale and prepare for the sequel.
Paramount has not yet announced what Yellowstone‘s sequel series will actually be about.
“The Dutton story continues and continues where Yellowstone departs in another epic story. We are excited to bring this new journey to audiences around the world,” David Glasser, CEO of 101 Studios (the production studio behind the show), said in a press release.
According to a report by deadline, follow-up plans are still in flux, including whether the sequel series will bring back the original’s main cast — minus Costner, of course — and if so, which one. Also not nailed down is whether McConaughey will actually star in the new series, though Deadline reports that he’s been in talks with Paramount since February and those talks are still ongoing.
Yellowstone season 5 part 2 does not have an official release date yet. Neither will Paramount’s newly announced sequel.
