In May, it was announced that Shahidi would receive the Youth Empowerment Award for her activism around “STEM awareness, women’s rights, civil rights and her countless acts of kindness to others.”
The Cam For a Cause Gala honors the late actor Cameron Boyce and benefits the Cameron Boyce Foundation, with Shahidi revealing in a statement that she knew Cameron from a very young age.
“I met Cameron when we were 5 years old, and even then his talent, his fearlessness and his belief in the strength of his peers was evident,” Shahidi said in a statement.
“It means so much to be recognized for my advocacy and the work I continue to do to bring about change,” she added.
“I am grateful to my friends and family at The Cameron Boyce Foundation for thinking of me, as I will always be inspired and energized by their incredible work in the fight to end epilepsy,” she concluded.
The Youth Empowerment Award aims to “honor Boyce’s legacy in highlighting an extraordinary young person who is committed to making a difference in the world.”
“Despite Cameron’s accomplishments during his short time here, he was essentially a true philanthropist,” the Cameron Boyce Foundation said in their statement.

In Cameron’s words, “Tomorrow’s leaders are fierce and unafraid.” Yara is a shining example of an extraordinary young leader who is undoubtedly fierce and fearless when it comes to using her voice for change,” the statement concluded.
Shahidi is preparing for the sixth season premiere of her Freeform series Grown-ish, a spin-off of ABC’s Black-ish.
She also stars as Tinkerbell in Peter Pan & Wendy and will lend her voice to PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie.
