At least two Yankees players told their agent this week that playing in the Bronx during the team’s ALCS loss to the Astros was an “unusually brutal experience,” according to a new report.

The Yankees were beaten 4-0 by Houston, one round away from the World Series, with the team’s usually powerful attack yielding two or fewer runs in all but one of the games.

And after a regular 99-win season, the fans didn’t hide their dismay, chasing third baseman Josh Donaldson and even Aaron Judge, as the slugger hit just .063 with zero home runs in the short-lived series.

Although New York is known as a tough place to play, members of the organization and even rival organizations were surprised by the atmosphere of the series, according to the report from SNY.

An old director said he was struck by ‘the irrational opinions about’ [general manager Brian] cashman and [manager Aaron] Boonen. I understand it’s World Series of bust, but they’re spoiled.’

The report goes on to say that other GMs and agents are “baffled” by fans’ perceptions of that combination, and that Cashman is regarded by rivals as one of the sport’s greatest executives.

The concern for the Yankees, aside from the fact that another year has passed since their last trip to the World Series in 2009, is that such woes will drive potential free players away.

The article notes that the organization is aware that “player response to toxicity is a tangible issue,” so it will be interesting to see how the team perform in a pivotal off-season where they – among others – will try to keep their star judge in town.

The Yankees season ended on a whim after a year in which they won the AL East by seven games.

They earned a bye in the wildcard round and passed the Guardians in five games before falling to Houston.
