Josh Donaldson thought he hit a home run for the New York Yankees against the Cleveland Guardians in ALDS Game 1, but the ball hit the top of the wall and came back into play.
New York’s third baseman was eventually tagged out after running past first base on what was initially a homerun walk. With the score tied at 1-1, Oscar Gonzalez of the Guardians picked up the baseball and threw it straight to Andres Gimenez, the player who threw Donaldson in the first place.
The bizarre sequence of events was certainly a rarity in modern games. Officials rated the game before disallowing the home run and confirming that Donaldson was out.
Isiah Kiner-Falefa followed by hitting a triple in the right corner of the field. Catcher Jose Trevino’s sacrifice fly put the team’s short stop on the scoreboard and the home crown erupted as New York took the lead 2-1.
