Despite Cleveland batting first, the New York Yankees were able to score four unanswered runs in Game 1 of the American League Divisional Series to beat the Guardians at home to a sold-out Yankee Stadium in the Bronx on Monday-evening.
After Steven Kwan of the Guardians hit a solo homerun in the top of the third, the Yankees immediately answered back with a Harrison Bader homerun in the bottom of the same inning.
They followed that up with a sacrifice fly by Jose Trevino to score Isaiah Kiner-Falefa in the fifth and a two-run homerun by Anthony Rizzo in the sixth for good measure.

New York ended the evening with only one runner left on base and finished one for two on runners in scoring position. On the other hand, the Guardians left eight runners, who were 0-for-8 and brought runners in scoring position.
The fifth inning turned into one of the wildest events of the evening. Third baseman Josh Donaldson hit a ball deep into right field that bounced off the top of the wall. Donaldson thought he had hit a home run, but realized the ball was still too late in play – and he was tagged out first. His Yankee teammates made up for that mistake, with Trevino Kiner-Falefa scoring to take a 2-1 lead.
Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole was credited with the win after giving up only one earned run on four hits in addition to one walk and strikeout eight in six-and-a-third innings. Relievers Jonathan Loaisiga, Wandy Peralta and Clay Holmes only gave up two combined hits after Cole was drawn.
It was a night to soon forget for Cleveland starter Cal Quantrill, who took the loss. He gave up only four hits, but two of them were homeruns. He struckout five batters and walked three, leaving him with a 5.40 ERA in the evening in the fifth inning.
