ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith is not happy with the New York Yankees after the team was defeated in the American League Championship Series by the Houston Astros and again failed to reach the World Series.

“I really hate the Yankees. What did I say on national television when everyone was celebrating Aaron Judge and his chase for a season at home? I don’t care about any of that.

“Congratulations, but these are the Yankees we’re talking about. It’s not individual awards that haunted, it’s the ‘chip’. And the fact is, you haven’t been to the World Series since 2009. Forget about winning one, you haven’t been there. And you lose to the Houston Astros repeatedly.

“So I was like, ‘I want to see what you do in the post season,’ and they were obviously swept. And the (other) team is celebrating in The Bronx, with champagne draped over them in the Yankee Stadium clubhouse. I am shocked.’

In the wake of the loss, fans on social media have called for the removal of general manager Brian Cashman and manager Aaron Boone. Cashman is the longest-serving general manager in North American sports, after 25 consecutive seasons with the Yankees. His contract will expire at the end of this season, but speculation from earlier this season indicates that he will be re-signed.

On the same show, ESPN baseball insider Jeff Passan said both futures could be relatively safe in The Bronx.

“We must not forget that Aaron Boone signed a three-year contract extension last year. It’s not like Hal Steinbrenner to pay money to guys who don’t hang out. The question for me is always when it comes to the Yankees, “If you fire someone, who are you going to hire?” Those are two very tough jobs.

Cashman’s that’s an even harder seat to fill right now. I mean… someone who’s president of the New York Yankees? There is a finite number of people who can fill that role.’

The Yankees have not reached the World Series since 2009, when they defeated the Philadelphia Phillies in six games to win the franchise’s 27th world title.
