Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka has reserved special praise for the new striker Gabriel Jesus after his brace against Leicester City.

The Gunners swept aside Brendan Rodgers’ men 4-2 at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday with Jesus scoring two and assisting two on his competitive home debut.

The Brazilian set the tone in pre-season, netting seven times but was unable to get on the scoresheet in Arsenal’s 2-0 opening day win at Crystal Palace.

But team-mate Xhaka believes the 25-year-old’s first Premier League goals came at the right time – the Gunners’ first home league game of the campaign.

‘Not only his first goal, but [Jesus’] performance was unbelievable,’ Xhaka told Arsenal’s official website.

‘Two goals, two assists, the work he does for the team is unbelievable and we’re more than happy. He’s scoring now as well, he’s helping us day-by-day and I’m more than happy for him because I think it’s very important to score at home.’

Jesus’ blistering start to life in north London has led many to believe that the Brazilian could be the final piece of the jigsaw to help Arsenal qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 2018.

The Gunners have been fast out of the blocks with Jesus the catalyst for the upturn in form.

Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers was particularly complimentary about Jesus’ display against his side, describing him as world class.

Rodgers said: ‘Anyone can see, when you bring in a world-class player, it’s not just what he brings to the team, it’s what a new signing gives to everyone else.

Meanwhile Xhaka has expressed his delight at his adapted role this season that sees the Swiss international deployed in a slightly more attacking role.

As a result, Xhaka registered an assist in the 4-2 victory over the Foxes and admitted he was enjoying his new found freedom in the side.

‘I’ve got more freedom to go up and down,’ he explained. ‘I know I can do that. I have a lot of freedom from the coach, from my teammates.

‘At the moment I’m happy with how everything is going. Let’s continue to work like this and hopefully at the end of the season we can be more than happy.’
