I think I’m a mutant. My mutant gift? Getting hyped about it X Men ’97.
I know these aren’t the most unique skills, but look: I’m a millennial and I can only withstand so much. Play the opening notes of that theme song and my brain is effectively rewired. If you’re reading this, you probably know what that’s like, and thus the first trailer for it X Men ’97 will probably hit you better than a good cup of coffee.
The trailer lays out super-heavy nostalgia, with footage from ‘Graduation Day,’ the series finale of X-Men: The Animated Series, playing on a CRT television before gradually zooming in and cutting to the new widescreen version of what is possibly the most ’90s cartoon ever made. And you know what? It whips.
Short and sweet, the visuals are light on plot and heavy on atmosphere, but there are some nice details teased. Cyclops leads the X-Men after Xavier’s death, Jean Gray appears pregnant and Magneto inherits everything Professor X left behind? Juicy!
The answers will come shockingly quickly – X Men ’97 premieres on Disney Plus on March 20, about a month from now. Until then, I’ll be staring longingly at my phone while lying in bed fully clothed.
You know, like in the meme.
